Saved by Grace

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

Yesterday I listened to an inspiring message from Dave Kennedy at the NewDay SDA church in Parker Colorado. During this message Dave talked about Faith and Grace. He also contrasted grace with mercy. By doing this he was able to demonstrate the awesomeness of grace.

I’ve spent most of my life thinking that I received grace when I accepted Jesus and I will receive it again on judgment day. In between these two events it was my job to ask God to make me perfect and to work as hard as I could to accomplish this goal. It’s exhausting because I’m continually failing.

I’ve also worried about forgetting a sin and not asking forgiveness. I was haunted by the thought that if I didn’t ask for forgiveness of a particular sin that it could keep me out of heaven on judgment day. (more…)

Frustrated with Christmas

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

I recently received an e-mail from my sister-in-law asking what I wanted from Christmas. Several years ago our family decided to exchange names as it was too difficult to buy gifts for everyone. This year my younger brother Bob got my name.

Each year it is also a struggle for us to decide what to get each other. Price isn’t a problem as we agreed to spend up to $75. The problem is that we both have everything we want. During the year if there is anything we need or want, we simply go buy it. As a result, the gifts we exchange are typically things we really don’t want or need. It’s pretty much wasted money. My younger brother has had my name for the last several years and now I own every Star Wars movie on DVD. My brother is a huge Star Wars fan and he just assumed that everyone should own this series.

So this year I decided to suggest that rather than buy gifts for each other, we research needs around the world and then give our gifts toward that need. Here’s the e-mail string and the discouraging response. I’m not sharing this to be mean-spirited as my brother doesn’t even know that my blog exists. I’m sharing this just to vent my frustration at Christmas, overindulgence, selfishness, and laziness. (more…)

Natural Remedy for Toenail Fungus

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Apply Vicks VapoRub to the affected nails daily for 6 months. With the application, the nail turns from yellow to brown, then sandpaper off the discolored portions. All the nail thickness diasppears and the new nail tissue will look normal. This treatment is benign, safe and cheap. Remember, natural remedies can take longer than drugs-be patient and consistent.

Being Picked by God

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

This morning I started reading Numbers chapter 1. As I started, I began to wonder why God put this “hard to read” material in the Bible?  The chapter starts out where God instructed Moses to take a census of all the men twenty years or older.  To do this, God pre-selected twelve men.

I then started to read the monotony….“from the tribe of Reuben – Elizur son of Shedeur”.  I then stopped and realized that God had selected just one man out of each tribe that had a population ranging from 30 to 70+ thousand people.  I stopped wondering how God chose the twelve men and if I would have been chosen. A Man is Worth More than a Woman

Friday, April 6th, 2007

Ok, that’s not a politically correct statement. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell this to God. In reading the first part of Leviticus 27, God outlines the approved sale prices for male and female slaves at different ages.  Consistently, the male is valued higher than a female - typically it is a two to one ratio.

I suppose that back in Bible times, when hard labor was the mainstay, that a male was able to generate more revenue than a female who most likely worked in the house.  Actually, I just remembered that women worked in the fields, too.  Again, I’m going to have to assume that since males are generally physically stronger, they are able to work faster and longer, which would generate more revenue.  Have I offended anyone? Does God Punish His People?

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

The answer is yes.  In Leviticus chapter 26, God talks about blessing his people who obey him and keep all of his commands.  In the latter part of the chapter, he also describes what will happen if you don’t.  Unfortunately, Israel ended up not obeying God’s commands and suffering the consequences described in this passage.  This includes eating the bodies of their sons and daughters.  (more…)

Broken Promises to God

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Have you ever made a promise to God and than broke it?  If yes, you are also probably feeling a lot of guilt and fear.  After all, it can’t be a good thing to break a promise to the King of the universe.  Right?

I remember knowing this guy who once promised God that if he could reach a certain weight that he would go into ministry by becoming a pastor.  Miraculously, he shed pounds like crazy and reached his desired weight.  It seemed that God kept his side of the deal; however, this individual never went into ministry.  This individual regained his weight and felt that he was being punished by God for not keeping his promise.  As a result, he lived a life filled with guilt.
