Number One Killer

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

The number one killer in the U.S. is heart disease.

I worked as a Medical Technologist in the clinical laboratory of hospitals and clinics for over 20 years. I saw first hand the effect diet has on health.

My job was to perform a venipuncture and do testing on the specimen in the lab. After collection, the blood is allowed to clot and them spun down in a centrifuge. After spinning, the red blood cells go to the bottom of the tube and the serum stays on top. (more…)

Quantity Breadmaking

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Yesterday I shared with you the easiest way to make 2 loaves of bread or 16 rolls. If you want to make larger quantities you need the pricey, but well worth it, Bosch Universal Kitchen Machine. I bought mine in the mid 80’s and it is still going strong. With it you can make dough for 4 large loaves of bread or over 4 dozen rolls with some dough left for pizza! (more…)

Bread Making Made Simple

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

This is the voice of experience talking and I can tell you the easiest way to make home-made bread is the following:

Get a breadmaker (garage sale, store or Goodwill). Forget the fancy options and pick one with a relatively large basket since you’ll be making only dough in it and a double recipe.

Here is the doubled recipe: (more…)

Problem Hands

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

I am 59 years old and all of my life I have had problems with my hands: hangnails, cracking, and general soreness.  I have tried every product known to man, including Noni cream, Burt’s Bees, Neurogena, etc.  Recently, a friend of mine moved away and gave me her copies of “Real Simple” magazine.  As I was reading one particular issue I came across an article on hand creams.  This article stated that Watkins Shea Butter was the voted best.  I looked online and noticed this product was a little pricey plus one had to pay shipping, so I kind of put that on the back burner.  (more…)

Being Picked by God

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

This morning I started reading Numbers chapter 1. As I started, I began to wonder why God put this “hard to read” material in the Bible?  The chapter starts out where God instructed Moses to take a census of all the men twenty years or older.  To do this, God pre-selected twelve men.

I then started to read the monotony….“from the tribe of Reuben – Elizur son of Shedeur”.  I then stopped and realized that God had selected just one man out of each tribe that had a population ranging from 30 to 70+ thousand people.  I stopped wondering how God chose the twelve men and if I would have been chosen. A Man is Worth More than a Woman

Friday, April 6th, 2007

Ok, that’s not a politically correct statement. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell this to God. In reading the first part of Leviticus 27, God outlines the approved sale prices for male and female slaves at different ages.  Consistently, the male is valued higher than a female - typically it is a two to one ratio.

I suppose that back in Bible times, when hard labor was the mainstay, that a male was able to generate more revenue than a female who most likely worked in the house.  Actually, I just remembered that women worked in the fields, too.  Again, I’m going to have to assume that since males are generally physically stronger, they are able to work faster and longer, which would generate more revenue.  Have I offended anyone? Does God Punish His People?

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

The answer is yes.  In Leviticus chapter 26, God talks about blessing his people who obey him and keep all of his commands.  In the latter part of the chapter, he also describes what will happen if you don’t.  Unfortunately, Israel ended up not obeying God’s commands and suffering the consequences described in this passage.  This includes eating the bodies of their sons and daughters.  (more…)
