The Lord was with Joseph! (That’s more powerful than you think)

This morning I read about Joseph in Egypt.  Once taken to Egypt, Joseph was sold as a slave to Potiphar, the captain of the king’s guards.  The story tells us that the Lord was with Joseph.  Furthermore, Potiphar also quickly discerned that the Lord was with Joseph and put him in charge of his entire household.

Eventually, Potiphar’s wife took notice of Joseph and wanted to have sexual relations with him; however, Joseph refused.  Joseph did not want to betray his master’s trust or sin against God.  Potiphar’s wife eventually became angry at his refusal and wrongfully accused Joseph of attempted rape.  As a result, Potiphar was extremely angry and threw Joseph in prison. Do Evil and the God will Kill You!

Ok - that’s the type of message that keeps people out of church.  Right?  After all, who wants to follow a God that has been painted as a ruthless tyrant looking for someone who deserves to die?  In reality, we all deserve death yet we still live; hence, the title is not necessarily true.  Or, is it?  Perhaps we are just waiting for our delayed punishment.  This morning I was reading Genesis chapter 38.  If you have time, you should read it yourself.  It’s an amazing story about a man with three sons and his daughter-in-law.  It’s quite a sordid story.  First, the eldest son marries the woman and then the Lord killed him because he did evil (see vs. 7).  The father then asks his second son to have sexual relations with his eldest son’s widow so she could have children.  Evidently, that was the next oldest son’s responsibility.  (more…)
